360|Flex Europe 2008 is over

This premiere conference in Europe only focused on Adobe Flex just ended yesterday.

Those 3 days went really well with great sessions from very good speakers, with their own presentation style, for a wide range of developers. Tom and John set up a great venue with the help of their sponsor and Comtaste, thanks again to them, you really rocks guys!

It was nice to finally meet those people that you only knew through their blogs or via twitter (Ciao Marco, Luca, Jens, Dan & Andrea, Neil & Ashley Michael and..and... so more !). Of course, I cannot (and should not) forget the lovely - and sexy - Adobe team (Sumi, Andrea, Lucinda,…). They were really opened and they took the time to talk and listen to us. We had the chance to have a great diner with them on Monday!

Regarding the number of attendees, we cannot tell that the European Flex communities massively travelled to Milano, even if quite a lot of different EU countries were represented (for Belgium Koen, Sakri and me). From that point, it was a bit disappointing, but it makes this conference turn to a more socializing event, which was not bad at all :  usually you only have the time to talk for 5 to 15 mins with some people, but here we were able to talk for hours during diner and later in the hotel lobby (“In Croatia we have a saying..." :-) ). It was such a great experience not to talk only about technical subjects, but also to share our point of view on salaries, Flex market penetration in the EU, how to deal with our family life, politics etc... it's so far one of the best event i attended !

We could think now about another great location for 360|Flex Europe 2009 and make this one an even more successful event... who said more beers ? :-)

My 360|Flex Europe schedule

Following Marco Casario's blog post, i think that i could also share my schedule. It is so hard to choose between sessions that i want to follow because of the speaker, and the other one because of the subject ! But hopefully, most of the time there's a match :-) So here it is :

360|Flex Europe (7-9 April, Milan)

Now i can tell for sure that i will attend 360|Flex Europe (Milan) in April :-) 

360|Flex is the premiere Flex developer conference for Europe purely about Adobe's Flex and AIR technology. It will give you the opportunity to expand your Flex knowledge, by being surrounded with the best and brightest in the Flex community, sharing what they know. It's also a great place to find new employees, to find contractors, to get exposure, even to make your own API public or announce a new product. Here's some highlights :

Try flexmdi !

Ben Clinkinbeard, Brian Holmes and Brendan Meutzner are announcing flexmdi :  flexmdi is a framework for easily creating MDI interfaces in Adobe Flex, something which comes really in handy in severy projets. Some highlights:

  • Draggable, resizable (from any edge/corner) windows
  • Default functionality for minimize, maximize/restore and close
  • Extensive event model on both a window and manager level
  • Externalized effects classes for transitions (allows developers to create their own or extend from our base implementations)
  • Cascade, tile and tile plus fill space window management
  • Context menu functionality
  • Ability to modify/customize default behaviors, not just override them (though you can do that too)
  • Construct UIs in MXML or AS

Fade to Gray effect

Alister McLeod, from Adobe Consulting, has done a great "Fade to Gray Flex Effect".

The problem is that i couldn't make it work with Flex 2.01 and 3 - lack of sleep ? :-)
But Tom Chiverton came to my rescue : he sent me a full working example.
