Synopsis: THE SARAH CONNOR CHRONICLES reveals what happens when SARAH (Lena Headey, “The Brothers Grimm,” “300”) stops running and goes on the offensive against an ever-evolving technological enemy bent on destroying her life, and perhaps the world. Her son, 15-year-old JOHN CONNOR (Thomas Dekker, “Heroes”), knows that he may be the future savior of mankind, but is not yet ready to take on the mantle of leadership that he’s told is his destiny. John finds himself inextricably drawn to CAMERON (Summer Glau, “Serenity,” “The Unit”), an enigmatic and otherworldly student at his high school, who soon proves to be much more than his confidante – she assumes the role of Sarah and John’s fearless protector. On their trail are not only threats from the future, but an intelligent and tough FBI agent, JAMES ELLISON (Richard T. Jones, “Judging Amy”), who soon becomes a powerful ally.

When i first heard of this new show, i had mixed feelings: i was happy to see the Terminator back on the screen, but wondering what more could be done with this franchise ? Without writing any spoilers, i see the pilot as a shorter version of the 2nd movie : good performances of Lena Headey (a greatSarah Connor !), Summer Glau (more attractive than Governator, no ?) and Thomas Dekker (a decent John Connor) and nice FX (nice first 5 minutes !).

And now ? This is THE good question. At this point, it is hard to say if it could meet our expectations or not, so few things have been shown in the pilot on how they will make it evolve... let's wait next episode.

Blu-ray vs HD-DVD : round 3 (or whatever...)

bocal.png Tuesday, 21 August 07 - 01:34 PM (GMT +01:00)
By Cyril Hanquez in Movies/TV/DVD/HD

Yesterday, Paramount Pictures and DreamWorks Animation SKG each announced that they will exclusively support the next-generation HD DVD format on a worldwide basis (press release).

Both said that the decision to distribute exclusively in the HD DVD format resulted from an extensive evaluation of current market offerings, which confirmed the clear benefits of HD DVD, particularly its market-ready technology and lower manufacturing costs.

This decision is a big surprise when you see that on a worldwide basis, BD is averaging nearly 70% market-share per week of all high definition titles sold this year and, in the U.S., it is out-performing HD DVD by a margin of 115% (who said thanks to the PS3 ?).

In the same time, Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment unveiled an aggressive global Blu-ray Disc release strategy including 29 new release and "must-have" catalog titles that runs through the end of the 2007 calendar year (press release).

no giant-robots on Blu-ray Disc

Now, what's next ? Do we have to wait for a third format to emerge - the so-awaited Rainbow-ray-HD-Disc-DVD aka RHD-DVD ? In fact, i don't see any HD format to win this stupid "HD war", and the saddest part is that the "Home Theater maniac" won't sleep anymore, his dreams haunted by a question : "Which format i should adopt ?"

One remote to rule them all

bocal.png Thursday, 26 July 07 - 10:42 PM (GMT +01:00)
By Cyril Hanquez in Movies/TV/DVD/HD

After talking yesterday with my colleague, i thought that i should write a small review of the Advanced Universal Remote Logitech Harmony 880.

With the multiplication of electronic devices at home, everyone is facing the problem of the proliferation of remote controls : a simple home theater requires to use up to 3 remotes just to accomplish a simple task like switching on the devices and launching the movie ! When you want to adjust the sound, you need to get the correct remote among those which lie on the sofa, and i don't talk about the "war" it creates with your wife :-)

Lot of people already tried a "standard" universal remote without much enthusiasm due to the fact that it's still complex to manipulate and navigate between devices. Here comes the Logitech Harmony 880.

Design & comfort

  • Comfort-Grip Shape: Hold on comfortably and reach all the buttons with ease.
  • Fully Backlit Controls and Color LCD Display
  • Charging Station: Put your remote in its own home and forget about changing batteries.
  • Up to 15 Components: Control video, audio, gaming—even lights and appliances.

Ease of use Simply connect your Harmony remote to your computer, and the set up wizard will walk you through the step-by-step online process. Enter the model numbers for your components among a list of more than 5,000+ manufacturers and 175,000+ devices. You could still make the remote control learn new IR codes not in the database.

  • Online Set Up:
  • Define Your Activities: By still using the online wizard, you define your activities (Watch TV, Listen to Music...) by selecting which devices are involved in the activity and set the status of each of them.

Ex. : to watch TV : my TV must be switched on, puted on the HD STB Channel, my Satellite receiver must be switched on and i want to control the sound of my TV (primary sound control).

It's really "magical" and so simple to setup. Just navigate through your activities, and the remote will switch on/off the correct devices, put them on the correct channel/selector, etc... No sound? No picture? No problem! There's even a handy "Help" button to guide you through simple troubleshooting and get you back in control.

  • Full Function Control and customization: By using the "Device" button, you have access to all functions of original remote controls of your devices. You can control both the standard and advanced functions. You can customize everything, from functions to icons, and by using the "Media" button, you can edit your favorites channels and put their logos.

Conclusion : if you're looking for a universal remote control easy to use but with advanced capabilities, go for the Logitech Harmony 880, you won't be disappointed !

Jericho : CBS first drops Bomb then...

    bocal.png Thursday, 07 June 07 - 12:03 PM (GMT +01:00)
    By Cyril Hanquez in Movies/TV/DVD/HD

Last May, CBS decided to cancel Jericho and announced their full 2007 - 2008 schedule (http://tv.ign.com/articles/788/788623p1.html).

Fans around the world fight against this decision by creating a Save JERICHO Petition - 114 899 Total Signatures from now - and a Send NUTS Campaign - around 40,296 lbs Over 20 TONS of Peanuts to CBS (that's about 8 million peanuts!!) !!.

    And finally...

    from CBS Entertainment.

    June 6, 2007

    To the Fans of Jericho:

    Wow!

Over the past few weeks you have put forth an impressive and probably unprecedented display of passion in support of a prime time television series. You got our attention; your emails and collective voice have been heard.

As a result, CBS has ordered seven episodes of “Jericho” for mid-season next year.  In success, there is the potential for more. But, for there to be more “Jericho,” we will need more viewers.

A loyal and passionate community has clearly formed around the show.  But that community needs to grow.   It needs to grow on the CBS Television Network, as well as on the many digital platforms where we make the show available.

We will count on you to rally around the show, to recruit new viewers with the same grass-roots energy, intensity and volume you have displayed in recent weeks.

At this time, I cannot tell you the specific date or time period that “Jericho” will return to our schedule.  However, in the interim, we are working on several initiatives to help introduce the show to new audiences.  This includes re-broadcasting “Jericho” on CBS this summer, streaming episodes and clips from these episodes across the CBS Audience Network (online), releasing the first season DVD on September 25 and continuing the story of Jericho in the digital world until the new episodes return. We will let you know specifics when we have them so you can pass them on.

On behalf of everyone at CBS, thank you for expressing your support of “Jericho” in such an extraordinary manner.  Your protest was creative, sustained and very thoughtful and respectful in tone.  You made a difference.

    Sincerely,

    Nina Tassler

    President, CBS Entertainment

P.S.      Please stop sending us nuts  :)

    Well done Jericho Rangers !

Dylan's NUTS!! to CBS Delivery Collection is an inspiring compilation of everything so far. Check it out!

    useless HD War

    bocal.png Monday, 12 March 07 - 11:19 PM (GMT +01:00)
    By Cyril Hanquez in Movies/TV/DVD/HD

The big problem in the world of High Definition is that there is no consensus on a unique format. Instead of that, two are available - Blu-ray and HD DVD - totally incompatibles but equivalent in term of quality. Both are supported by a gaming console (Playstation 3 anbd XBOX 360) and have big names in their ranks.

So which player will you buy ?

It's a fact that more studios have signed up to the Blu-ray format, theoretically guaranteeing that Blu-ray will have more content than HD DVD, at least in the short to medium term.

But Warner Home Video launched its “Total Hi Def” disc, which plays the HD DVD format on one side and the Blu-ray Disc format on the other. The problem is by releasing movies in both formats, the format war will continue for longer, and will probably put HD DVD at a disadvantage.

Now LG (and potentially other companies will follow) is launching a dual-deck player that could also solve the problem.

It's a big farce, don't you think ? :-) Consumers are now completely lost by all those formats and disc players available, and don't know which one to choose. Majors are waiting for consumers to adopt one format or another. Prices won't decrease because of the split of the market [...]

In conclusion, i will cast two spells :

                         "Riddikulus" - on both formats
                         "Rictusempra" - on you :-)

    (thanks to Harry !)
